How you receive mail / Short-term vs. long-term

Need one email or a lasting way to receive mail?

Temporary email delivers verification messages right to a web inbox. Email aliases forward messages to your own inbox. Both keep your public address separate from your everyday one, but they differ in how long they last and where you receive mail.

First, consider where the email should go

Don’t choose based only on the fact that both hide your address. Ask yourself: will you need to read this email tomorrow or next month?

Option A / Short-term

A short-term inbox in your browser

Open the page to get an address, then use it for one-time verification. Check incoming mail on this site. The address stops receiving mail when it expires, making it a good fit for tasks with a clear end date.

Option B / Ongoing

A controllable alias that forwards to your inbox

Verify your login, then create a public-facing address that forwards messages to your usual inbox. Use a separate alias for each purpose, and pause, reactivate or delete it whenever you need.

Compare what you can control

This table compares where you receive mail and how you can manage it. It doesn’t guarantee that every website will accept either type of address.

Short-term option

A simple inbox for the code you need right now.

When you don’t want to share your everyday email with a new website just to try it out, a temporary inbox lets you verify your address first. Once the task is done, you can move on without maintaining the address long-term.

If that trial account later becomes important, update the email in the service’s settings to one you can keep accessing. Don’t wait until you need a password reset to discover the old address has expired.

Long-term option

Keep your public address separate from your real inbox.

Contact forms, public portfolios and ongoing subscriptions may keep sending messages. Create a different alias for each source to see where mail is coming from and stop forwarding from any one source whenever you like.

An email alias doesn’t replace the security of your destination inbox. For important accounts, use a strong password, a recoverable email address and a second verification method that you control.

Choose an address that fits how you’ll use it.
